Could a modified Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) z-score chart be suitable for growth tracking of children with normal and extreme growth patterns?
A recent study illustrated the difficulties in optimal growth monitoring of children with severe obesity or underweight by using the standard CDC age- and sex-specific BMI percentile growth charts. The researchers found that children with severe obesity could not be plotted on the standard CDC BMI percentile chart because their BMI points lay above the chart cutoff. However, they did find that the modified BMI z-score chart which included new percentile curves above the 95th percentile, allowed uniform tracking.
The team suggests considering the modified charts as a replacement for the current CDC 2000 BMI percentile charts.
