Over the weekend, our team members met for our first Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Ottawa as a satellite meeting to the 6th Conference on Recent Advances in the Prevention and Treatment of Childhood and Adolescent Obesity! Because our team stretches across Canada, this was our first chance to get together in person to discuss study progress and network with one another among other things.
Check out some of the highlights!
Almost all our our Team ABC3 Project Leaders were able to attend our AGM and provide study updates on their current projects, along with sharing insights on successes and challenges to date. We also had the pleasure of welcoming Stephen Cook (Team ABC3 Scientific Advisory Board member) to provide a US-based perspective on national-level activities related to preventing and managing childhood obesity through the American Academy of Pediatrics’ Institute of Healthy Childhood Weight.
As you know, our team includes a number of smaller sub-studies (eight to be exact!), so sub-teams had the chance to participate in break out sessions to discuss relevant issues for their individual projects. We opened our AGM to all trainees attending the conference for a chance to meet with our team of senior researchers for one-on-one ‘Office Hours‘. Trainees were able to get advice on career goals, find out about current projects and research, and make new connections.
We’re pleased to share that Hayyah Clairman (MSc Student, U of Toronto; Supervisor: Jill Hamilton) and Meloja Satkunam (MPH Student, McMaster University; Supervisor: Catherine Birken) were the successful applicants for Team ABC3 Travel Awards to support their participation in our AGM and the Recent Advances conference. In addition to joining our AGM, they both presented posters on their Team ABC3 related projects:
Hayyah Clairman presented her poster, Pathways to Eating in Children and Adolescents with Obesity, which describes the progress on one of our studies: Pathways to overeating: Determining eating behaviour phenotypes in children with severe obesity. Other Team ABC3 members included on this work include Drs. Elizabeth Dettmer, Annick Buchholz, Kristina Cordeiro, Katerina Maximova, Alene Toulany (Co-Investigators) and Katherine Morrison and Jill Hamilton (Project Leaders). Pssst…Hayyah also had an ‘In Focus’ interview with Team ABC3, check it out here.
Meloja Satkunam presented her poster, Comparing definitions of severe obesity in young children: A cross sectional study of TARGet Kids! and BORN Ontario, which is part of the study: Prevalence and health care utilization of severe obesity in children accessing primary health care in Ontario. Other team members on this work include Drs. Laura Anderson, Sarah Carsley, Jonathon Maguire, Patricia Parkin, Ann Sprague (Co-Investigators), and Catherine Birken (Project Leaders) on behalf of the TARGet Kids Collaboration.
Thank you to everyone who participated and helped make our first AGM a success!
We’d also like to thank UBC Interprofessional Continuing Education and CHEO for co-hosting the well-organized and well-attended 6th Conference on Recent Advances in the Prevention and Treatment of Childhood and Adolescent Obesity!
