The Challenge of Medical Neglect and Pediatric Obesity

In a recent paper, Gray and colleagues highlight the common challenges faced by teams when addressing medical neglect and offers insights on navigating the medical protection of children with obesity in a way that minimizes adverse outcomes.

Medical neglect is defined as the failure of caregivers to seek or to provide necessary medical care, which then places the child at risk of serious harm. In cases where the predominant concern for neglect is the child’s excess weight, reporting becomes challenging for weight management teams given the complexity of pediatric obesity and the nuances involved in defining imminent harm to the child.
