Dr. Kristy Wittmeier, Director of Knowledge Translation at the Manitoba Centre for Healthcare Innovation, recently wrote a guest post on Dr. Sharma’s blog – Obesity Notes. She highlights the pursuit of Manitoba healthcare providers and researchers to build a coordinated provincial strategy to promote healthy weight in children and youth. She notes that although Manitoba has made significant progress in type 2 diabetes research and care, they have made less progress in addressing prevention and treatment of obesity in children and youth. In response, they received funding to pursue a study called “Mapping the state of pediatric weight management programs in Manitoba” in which they will look to the Canadian Pediatric Weight Management Registry (CANPWR) and 8 pediatric weight management clinics in the United States to help inform a Manitoba approach.
We still have a way to go, but with projects like this, Canada is well on its way to shed light on key knowledge gaps in our treatment and prevention of childhood obesity.
